Booher: fiscally sound budget focuses on economic recovery, education and public safety

LANSING?State Sen. Darwin Booher, R-Evart, issued the following statement Thursday after the Michigan Senate approved a Fiscal Year 2013 state budget plan:

“This is a fiscally sound budget plan that focuses on continuing economic recovery and increasing support of education and public safety.

“This plan is founded on the fundamental principles that state government should live within its means and should work to improve efficiency in state spending so that we are able to get the greatest ‘value for the money.’

“Creating jobs and growing the economy are the best long-term solutions to Michigan’s challenges. That is why this budget builds on the foundation laid last year, which has already resulted in a recovering economy that is creating jobs at a rate faster than the national average.

“More jobs and the resulting decreased strain on state resources have enabled us to invest in important priorities in this budget. As chair of the appropriations subcommittee for community colleges, I am especially proud that our improving economy has made it possible this year for us to increase support for schools, community colleges and universities.

“Michigan still faces challenges, and this responsible budget supports our priorities while remaining watchful of our spending.”
