LANSING? Sen. Darwin Booher, R-Evart, issued the following statement Thursday after listening to Gov. Rick Snyder’s fiscal year 2013 state budget presentation:
“I am pleased that the governor’s proposed budget focuses on continuing economic recovery, addressing our debt and emphasizing our commitment to education.
“The tough decisions we made last year resulted in an economy that is creating jobs at a rate faster than the national average and a state government that lives within its means. With more Michigan residents working and government constantly looking for ways to get the greatest value for the dollar, we are now financially able to look at investment.
“As chair of the appropriations subcommittee for community colleges, I am especially glad to see an increased commitment to education at all levels. This plan includes $113 million in additional funding for schools and increases support to our community colleges and universities by up to 3 percent.
“Since this proposal is based on economic projections for next fiscal year, we must be fiscally responsible in how we proceed. However, I am greatly encouraged by the economic growth Michigan is seeing every day, and I look forward to promptly finalizing a budget that enhances support for important priorities like education, public safety and economic development.”
