Booher welcomes Army, Navy veteran to Senate Memorial Day service

LANSING, Mich.—State Sen. Darwin Booher, R-Evart, welcomed veteran William Smith, of Evart, to the state Capitol on Thursday for the Michigan Senate’s 21st Annual Memorial Day Service, which honors Michigan residents killed in action during the previous 12 months.

Smith is a veteran of both the U.S. Army, serving from 1968-70 in the Vietnam War, and of the U.S. Navy, where he retired as a Lt. Commander in 1997 after a 20-year career.

The Michigan Senate held its first Memorial Day Service in 1995 at the initiative of former U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers, who was then a state senator.
