Booher: Joint Capital Outlay Subcommittee recommends West Shore Community College project

LANSING, Mich. – West Shore Community College is set to receive more than $2.1 million from the state for a project to renovate and add on to its Technical Center after the Joint Capital Outlay Subcommittee recommended a Fiscal Year 2015 budget supplemental on Wednesday.

“West Shore’s Technical Center is long overdue for an upgrade, and I was happy to cast my vote in favor of recommending this budget supplemental,” said Sen. Darwin Booher, R-Evart, who is a member of the subcommittee. “With more than $2.1 million dedicated to the school’s project, I am confident it will go a long way toward improving the facility and making it a better place to teach and learn.”

Specifically, the supplemental included in House Bill 4095 provides planning authorization for the approximately $4.3 million project, of which more than $2.1 million would come from the state. The project would include the renovation of 66,000 square feet of existing space and a 2,700 square feet addition to the center. The project would expand high-bay welding lab capacities, remodel existing classroom space to increase student capacity, and remodel other classrooms, corridors, offices, and restrooms throughout the facility.

The project was given the highest priority ranking by the state Department of Technology, Management and Budget amongst community college requests. The supplemental also includes funding for other projects at colleges and universities throughout Michigan.

HB 4095 now returns to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
